Thinking Outside the Theme: Using The Naughty List for a Birthday Layout with Heather!
For this layout, I started with photos from my daughter’s ninth birthday. I perused Traci’s collections, and discovered that I was really drawn to some of the patterned papers in The Naughty List collection. Now, the challenge was to use this Christmas themed collection in a way that it would fit a birthday photo. I found a few stickers from The Naughty List that would work, and then went off road a bit.
I started with a sheet of white cardstock and added some pink mixed media spray.
Then, while the mixed media dried for a bit, I backed the photos with the patterned papers that I had chosen
Then, I found several number 9 stamps and stamped them in a variety of colors around the background
At this point, it became all about the embellishments. I placed the stickers from The Naughty List collection, added some more stamping, some epoxy star stickers and a doily.. I feel the stamping really helped define the theme of the layout, and coordinated well with the fun patterned papers.
The layout process took a bit of a turn when I decided I didn’t care for the tissue paper behind the photos, so I tore it all off (yes, I had already glued it down, sigh) and then made a tissue paper bow to make the candle photo mimic a present.
Lastly, I stamped out the word nine to serve as a title and provide some additional repetition of the theme. I did not add journaling to the layout, however, I often write on the back of my layouts if there are any specific details that I want to write about. Usually, this is when I have lots of thoughts and not much space to put it on the layout.
I love the end result, so if you love the color scheme of a particular collection, but the theme isn’t quite what you need, don’t be afraid to run with it and use your stamps to make it work for you.
There is a process video on YouTube if you’d like to see more details about the making of this layout.
