Homespun Holidays: Creating Fun Felt Ornaments for Your Tree

It’s so much fun crafting especially for the holidays. Today I am going to show you how you can use Traci’s designs to decorate your tree. As a bonus I am going to show you how you can easily adapt this technique to create the purffect gift for that special feline friend in your life!!! Let’s go!

Ornament Supplies
Printed pattern created from digital image
Fabric marker or pen
Scissors
Needle
Embroidery thread
Felt
Matching ribbon
Polyfill stuffing/cotton balls or catnip

t’s really easy to create an ornament from one of Traci’s digital stickers. The first thing you are going to do is pick out a design that you want to make your ornament from. You will want to open up the sticker in your editing program and resize it. For the poinsettia, I resized it to three inches. Remember that once stuffed and stitched your ornament will be smaller than your actual pattern. Print out your design in draft mode on regular paper. No need to use up your ink or good cardstock for this project. You will just be using this image as a template.

Step 1

Cut out your image and trace it onto the felt. You can use a disappearing fabric pen or even a pen that won’t bleed through your felt to do this. Once cut out just remember to keep the marked side inside your ornament. An alternate way is to pin your pattern to the felt and cut around the template. You will need two for each ornament you make, one for the front and one for the backside.

Step 2

To give your hoop some extra character, consider adding a ribbon or trim to the outer edge of the embroidery hoop. I added white pom pom trim around the hoop and then some classics read and white ribbon to the tip of the hoop which I can use to hand the hoop if needed.

Step 3

Now you are going to want to attach your two pieces of felt together. The easiest way is using a blanket stitch. There are many tutorials online showing how to create this stitch. Do not finish stitching all around the ornament. If you do, you won’t be able to stuff your ornament.

Step 4

For the ornament, fill with polyfill or cotton. OR fill your design with catnip for a fun homemade cat toy!!!

Step 5

Cut a piece of ribbon to create a hanger for your ornament. Line up the two ends and tie a knot. Take the knotted end and tuck it inside the ornament. Continue stitching until the ornament is sealed.

Your ornament is now complete.

Using the same techniques above, it is really easy to create a catnip toy for that special cat in your life. Here I used one of Traci’s star stickers for my pattern. I stuffed it with catnip and added a bell and some ribbons. They also sell catnip spray (who knew that was a thing?) and I misted it with some spray. As you can see, Sherlock is loving his toy! I’m going to have to make some more since it doesn’t look like he is going to share with the other cats!

Hope you have fun creating some ornaments for your tree or some gifts for that special cat in your life!
